If your website is TWO or more years old, you may be sitting on the edge of a MOBILE FRIENDLY OR DIE cliff.

Google Started it…

Since the early 2010’s, it was pretty obvious that mobile devices like Smartphones and Tablets, that put the power of the internet into the hands and pockets of young and old, would eventually be the preferred way to connect to the world. With year after year of exponential growth in the number of mobile devices, the leading role of the Desktop PC, would soon be taken over by mobile.

In May of 2015, Google made the announcement that it had happened, “more Google searches take place on mobile devices than on computers in 10 countries including the US and Japan.”

Ready or Not!

Google had been preparing for this day for years and had put pressure on designers to build their websites in a manner that provided a quality experience on mobile devices… or Google would use “Search Engine Results Pages” (SERPs) to reward websites that offered a quality user experience for mobile users, and sites that did not provide a quality mobile experience would see lesser results.

Growing Pains.

Developers were instructed to make their websites mobile friendly or add a second, mobile friendly website especially designed for smaller screens and touch points. Google began providing mobile users with SERPs that gave preference to websites that provided a good mobile experience over websites that provided a poor mobile experience. In the search results, they floated a “MOBILE” tag over the results to indicate sites that were mobile friendly.

With Mobile surpassing all other user platforms, Google is now ready to take the next step and treat the new leader with respect. Mobile is the new standard platform for internet browsing and search. Sorry desktop, but don’t fret. Google also announced an improvement to Desktop indexing. After how many years, Google will now look inside your accordian and other collapsing code. (more about that at a later date)

Google “mobile first”.

Google will still crawl and index the desktop version of your site but it will be using Google’s Mobile User Agent. With the bulk of internet traffic coming from mobile, it makes sense that Google would shift their focus to satisfy the majority of the end users.

What about your website?

If your website is TWO or more years old, you may be sitting on the edge of a MOBILE FRIENDLY OR NOT cliff. Fortunately, testing your site for being Mobile Friendly is easy… Just Browse to it on your mobile device.

How does it look?

  • Can you read the text or is it cut off?
  • How about the images, do they resize and display correctly.
  • Is there a menu and does it work
  • Are links ‘clickable’?

If you are on your Laptop or Desktop.

  1. Open a browser window to your website.
  2. Use your mouse to grab the right edge or bottom corner of the site.
  3. Pull the right edge to the left, making the window narrower.
  4. If the text and images re-arrange and resize themselves, you are likely the lucky owner of a “Responsive Design” website.
  5. If the site just gets cut off or doesn’t look right, you may need some professional help.
