Top 5 Common Mistakes Made in SEO & Lead Generation

When it comes to SEO and lead generation, it’s important to know even the most basic techniques to get the job done right. However, people with little SEO and lead generation experience can make mistakes. Here are five of the most common and how to avoid them.

Not Using Analytics to See What Works

One of the biggest mistakes is not using Google Analytics to see what’s working for your website and what isn’t. No two keyword phrases will work the same way for you, so you need to periodically check your analytics to see if the keyword phrases that you’re using make sense for you, and adjust them accordingly if they aren’t.

Ignoring Local Search

Any business — whether a small business or a huge corporation — is part of a local geographical community. If you don’t tailor your SEO and lead generation to generate results in the local market, your SEO efforts will be fruitless. To avoid this mistake, make sure that some of your keyword phrases are geo-targeted. For example, if your business is located in Indianapolis, make sure you have a keyword phrase with “Indianapolis” at the end.

Wrong Keyword Phrases

Certain keyword phrases consistently work within your particular industry, but if you don’t use them, you will get no results. To correct this problem, make sure that you do a lot of research into which keyword phrases work best for your industry and deploy them appropriately.

Keyword Stuffing

Your keyword phrase should not be repeated too often throughout a website page or blog post. A good rule of thumb is to use your keyword phrase every 100 words, so in a 300-word article, you should use your keyword phrase no more than three times. If you repeat the key phrase more often than that (the so-called keyword stuffing), search engines may flag your content as spam, meaning it won’t rank at all in search results.

Plagiarism

Perhaps the most serious mistake you need to avoid in SEO and lead generation is plagiarism. Having a website page with content copied from other sources will lead to your page being flagged as spam by Google. To avoid this — as well as the possible legal consequences of copyright infringement — make sure your content is original. If you hire copywriters, run their work through a plagiarism checker like Copyscape before publishing the content on your website.
